Golfspiel als Thriller: Coma von John Niven
„Kill your Friends“ war das erste Buch, des schottische Autors John Niven, der damit gleich zum gefeierten Schriftsteller wurde. Mit „Coma“ erscheint nun sein zweites Werk als e-book und erobert die Herzen der Leser im Sturm.
Gary ist ein biederer Angestellter, der sich seit seiner frühen Jugend als erfolgloserer Golfspieler probiert. Aber er gibt trotzdem nicht auf, und blamiert sich bei den Turnieren in seinem Club regelmäßig. Bis eines Tages ein Golfball von der Flugbahn abkommt und Gary am Kopf trifft. Danach ist alles anders, denn als Gary aus dem Koma erwacht hat er nicht nur ein Problem mit unkontrollierbaren Erektionen und der sexualisierter Wortwahl, sondern er kann plötzlich auch Golf spielen. Und zwar richtig gut. Während Gary mit jedem Schlag besser wird, gerät sein Bruder Lee immer tiefer in den selbstverschuldeten Schlamassel, denn ein geplanter Drogendeal geht schief und die Geldgeber haben keine Lust länger auf die Schuldenrückzahlung zu warten. „Coma“ macht von der ersten Seite an Spass und nimmt immer mehr Fahrt auf. Selbst als bekennender Nichtgolfer verfällt man dem Reiz eines Spiels, das man vorher nicht mal ansatzweise als Sport kategorisiert hätte. In der Nebengeschichte um Lee und seine Gangsterkollegen geht es bisweilen äußerst brutal zur Sache und man erfährt wozu Golfschläger noch alles eingesetzt werden können. John Niven spricht eine deutliche und herbe Umgangssprache, die sehr amüsant ist, wenn man auf derberen Humor steht. Man sollte das Buch eher nicht in öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln lesen, da man bisweilen von der Sprache zu unkontrolliertem Lachen verführt wird.
