Das eBook Format epub setzt sich weiter durch

Wie gestern bei Golem und weiteren Seiten berichtet setzt Sony auf das eBook Format epub. Sony scheint nicht den gleichen Fehler machen zu wollen wir damals bei den MP3-Playern und Digitalkameras. Ich kann mich noch gut daran erinnern, dass ich die Sony Geräte zwar wirklich gut fand, aber mich aufgrund der extra für Sony erhältlichen Speicherkarten etc. dagegen entschieden habe. Bei den eBooks öffnet sich Sony für das Format epub. Im Vergleich dazu setzt Amazon mit der Kindle Familie auf eine geschlossene Infrastruktur. Bis Ende 2009 will Sony sein eBook Angebot auf epup umgestellt haben.
Neben den Sony Readern setzen auch txtr (kommt im Herbst), Plastic Logic (Anfang 2010) und der Cybook Gen3 (bereits in Deutschlan erhältlich) auf das epub Format. Spannend wird auch sein, mit welchen Formaten der Vodafone Reader aufwarten wird. Aktuellen Gerüchte zufolge wird der Vodafone eReader im Herbst auf den Markt kommen.
Das epub Format basiert auf XML und hat damit den Vorteil der Flexibilität gegenüber verschiedenen Bildschirm- und Schriftgrößen. Damit wird ein freies Fließen von Textinhalten auf den verschiedensten eReadern gewährleistet. Hinter dem epup steht das International Digital Publishing Forum (IDPF). Weitere Vorteile sind die Integration von DRM sowie Flash- und Bildelementen. Bei Fachbüchern bezweifel ich jedoch, ob epub das richtige Format sein wird. Denn bei komplexen Illustrationen, Bildern und Tabellen können Seitenumbrüche auch zu einem weniger geschmeidigen Lesevergnügen führen.
