Ähnlich wie Simon Beckett unterrichtete auch Dan Brown bevor er seine Passion zum Beruf machte. Als einer der erfolgreichsten Schriftsteller der letzten Jahrzehnte fesselt der Sohn eines Mathematikprofessors seine Leser mit Thrillern wie Illuminati oder Sakrileg. Ersteres ist seit diesem Jahr auch in den deutschen Kinos zu sehen. Das Sakrileg wurde in insgesamt 35 Ländern veröffentlicht.
Bevor sich Dan Brown als Schriftsteller bewährte versuchte er sich als Komponist und Sänger. Er gründete sogar sein eigenes Plattenlabel Dalliance. Der große Durchbruch als Sänger scheiterte jedoch daran, dass Dan Brown Bühnenauftritte und Live-Konzerte ablehnte. Für ihn Stand die Musik und nicht die eigene Person im Vordergrund.
eBooks waren schon 1998 für Dan Brown ein Thema. Seinen ersten Thriller Diabolus (engl. Digital Fortress) veröffentlichte der amerikanische Schrifsteller auch als eBook. Im Jahr 2000 erschien dann sein zweiter Thriller, Illuminati (engl. Angel & Demons). Die Recherche für seinen Bestseller führte in nach Europa. Auf den Bildungsreisen quer durch Europe begleitete ihn seine Frau, eine Kunsthistorikerin. Die Tatsache, dass er das Marketing für seine Bücher fast alleine machen musste schlug sich in den Verkaufzahlen nieder. Erst durch den Wechsel seines Lektors Jason Kaufmann zu Doubleday änderte sich das schlagartig. Kaufmann hatte bei seinen Vertragsverhandlungen immer gefordert, Dan Brown als Autor auch im neuen Verlag zu behalten. Doubleday stimmte zu und bot Dan Brwon einen Vertrag für Sakrileg sowie eines weiteren Buches. Die Marketing Maschine des zu Random House zugehörigen Verlages lief an und im Herbst 2002 verteilte Doubleday 10.000 Fahnenabzüge an Buchhändler, Rezensenten und bekannte Kritiker. Das führte dazu, dass der Buchhandel gleich größere Mengen bestellte und Doubleday eine Erstauflage von 230.000 für Sakrileg erstellen lies. Das Buch erschien im März 2003 und schaffte es in kürzester Zeit auf Platz 1 der Bestsellerliste der New York Times. Und das sollte sich so schnell auch nicht ändern. Zwei Jahre lang hielt sich das Buch in der Bestsellerliste. Es wird sich zeigen, ob The Lost Symbol nachziehen kann.
