Kalte Asche (Originaltitel: Written in bone) ist nach Chemie des Todes der zweite brillante Hunter-Thriller von Simon Beckett.
Dr. David Hunter wird zu einem neuen Fall auf die Insel Runa vor Schottlands Küste gerufen. Ein Unwetter tobt über den Äusseren Hybriden. Hunter soll ein Brandopfer identifizieren, die Leiche wurde von dem pensionierten Polizisten Andrew Brody gefunden. Das Seltsame ist, dass die Leiche bis zur Unkenntlichkeit verbrannt, ja tatsächlich zu Asche zerfallen ist – bis auf die Füsse und eine Hand, die fast unversehrt geblieben sind – ebenso wie die Umgebung. Er ahnt noch nicht, dass hier einer seiner schwierigsten Fälle beginnt. Wenig später gehen das Gemeindehaus, ein Wohnwagen mitsamt eines Polizisten sowie ein Boot mit einer zu neugierigen Reporterin ebenfalls in Flammen auf.
Die winzige Insel Runa bietet eine schaurige Kulisse für diesen Thriller, bizarre Felsformationen, eine karge Hügellandschaft, kaum Menschen – ein sehr einsamer Ort, insgesamt eine bedrückende Stimmung. Inmitten dessen sind Hunter, der pensionierte Polizist sowie sein Kollege von der Dorfpolizei auf sich allein gestellt, denn der Sturm verhindert ein Eingreifen von der Aussenwelt. Es kommt immer wieder zu Konflikten, vor allem zwischen Hunter und der eingeschworenen Gemeinschaft auf Runa, die Fremden gegenüber mehr als skeptisch auftritt, man merkt richtiggehend das Knistern in der Luft zwischen den Protagonisten. Alle Bewohner Runas werden überprüft, doch alle erscheinen unverdächtig. Bis der Forensiker doch noch die Identität des Opfers klären kann: es handelt sich um eine Prostituierte aus dem Städtchen Stornoway in Schottland.
Simon Beckett versteht es auch in diesem Teil der Hunter-Serie, einer guten Mischung aus Thriller und Krimi, mit dem Leser zu spielen. Denn selbst wenn man glaubt, die Verbrechen seien geklärt, ergeben sich auf den letzten Seiten noch überraschende Wendungen. Becketts geniales Wissen über Forensik und Tatortanalyse machen auch dieses Werk wieder einmalig spannend bis zur letzten Seite.

Der englische Titel erschien bereits im Juli 2007 im Bantam Verlag, das eBook ist bisher leider nur auf Englisch erhältlich (seit Sept. 2007 bei Random House).

kalte asche war vielschichtiger und lebendiger als der vorgänger und ist auch schneller zu potte gekommen.eigentlich kann man die beiden bücher nicht miteinander vergleichen.das erste war ein einführungwerk und ein debut und das andere die weiterentwicklung eines sensiblen protagonisten.persönlich gesehen hat mir ‘kalte asche besser’ gefallen als ‘chemie des todes’.

Hab jetzt auch beide Romane beendet. Fand “Chemie des Todes” unheimlicher und spannender, aber auch “Kalte Asche” ließ sich sehr gut lesen und war durchaus spannend. Endlich mal wieder Bücher, bei denen man sich auf die Lesesession freut!! Übrigens hat “Kalte Asche” seltsamerweise bei den Kritikern besser abgeschnitten als “Chemie…”. Der neue Beckett “Leichenblässe” erscheint am 16.1.09.Bis dahin kann man sich die zeit mit dem besuch der seite www.simonbeckett.com vertreiben, da sind ein paar Kurzgeschichten (allerdings auf englisch) veröffentlicht.

Ich finde Kalte Asche besser. Nur finde ich den Schluss nicht so toll. Mir hätte es besser gefallen wenn Grace nicht mehr aufgetaucht wäre. Aber ich freu mich schon auf ein neues Buch von ihm. Wer einmal angefangen hat Simon Beckett zu lesen der kann das Buch einfach nicht mehr weglegen und das kann man nicht von vielen behaupten!
