Hauptfigur des Thrillers Chemie des Todes (Original: The Chemistry of Death, erschienen 2006) von Simon Beckett ist Dr. David Hunter, einer der berühmtesten Rechtsmediziner Englands. Sein Spezialgebiet als Rechtsmediziner war die forensische Anthropologie. Nach einem tragischen Unfall seiner Frau und seiner Tochter gibt er seine Passion auf und zieht inkognito in das kleine Dorf Manham, um dort der klassischen Schulmedizin nachzugehen und den Verlust seiner Familie zu verarbeiten. Als Doktor in der hießigen Arztpraxis von Dr. Maitland spürt er die Abneigung der Dorfbewohner gegenüber Fremden. Da sein Arbeitgeber und Vertrauter im Rollstuhl sitzt übernimmt David Hunter immer mehr Aufgaben innerhalb der Praxis. Die beiden Kollegen verbinden das gleiche Schicksal. Auch Dr. Maitlands Frau starb durch einen tragischen Unfall. Langsam findet David Anschluss im Dorf und lebt sein Leben als einfacher Landarzt ohne jedoch seinen Fremdenstatus zu verlieren.
Die scheinbare Idylle und das ruhige Leben im Dorf Manham ändern sich jedoch als eine Frau tot und verstümmelt aufgefunden wird. David denkt sofort an Sally, von der er schon länger nichts mehr gehört hat. An ihrem Haus angekommen merkt er sofort das hier etwas nicht stimmt. Als er auch noch ihren Hund tot unter einem Baum findet verständigt er die Polizei. Schnell verdichten sich die Anzeichen, dass es sich bei der Frau tatsächlich um Sally handelt. Sie ist ebenfalls eine Fremde und auch aus diesem Grund ist ihr Schicksal für die Dorfbewohner zwar tragisch aber gerät auch schnell wieder etwas in Vergessenheit. David Hunter weiht den ermittelnden Kommissar in seine Vergangenheit ein, und entschließt sich die Polizei mit seinen Fähigkeiten als forensicher Anthropologe zu unterstützen. Er untersucht neben der Leiche auch die Fliegen, Maden, Hautrückstände und den Eisengehalt im Boden, um die Todeszeit zu bestimmen.
Dann verschwindet eine weitere Frau, diesmal eine Einheimische, und das Dorf gerät in Angst und Schrecken. Auch sie wird erst nach über 2 Wochen gefunden und weist ähnliche Verstümmelungen wie Sally auf. Jeder wird verdächtigt und die Polizei tappt lange Zeit im Dunkeln. Auch als die dritte Frau verschwindet hat die Polizei noch keine Spur. Wenn der Mörder nach dem gleichen Prinzip vorgeht, bleiben der Polizei drei Tage, um Jenny noch lebend zu finden…. .
Ich habe die Chemie des Todes mit Freude und Spannung gelesen. Simon Beckett versteht es den Leser regelrecht in die Geschichte zu ziehen, und den Spannungsbogen konstant auf einem hohen Level zu halten. Auch der Leser rätselt und verdächtigt einzelne Dorfbewohner. Am Ende kommt jedoch alles anders.
Aber ich konnte nicht mit allem etwas anfangen. Träume die wahr werden und die Anspielungen an etwas Übersinnliches empfand ich eher als merkwürdig und unpassend, da das nicht zu den präzisen Kenntnissen von Forensik, Spurensuche und Tatortanalyse passte. Störend fand ich auch die sich wiederholenden Phrasen des Ich-Erzählers David Hunter am Ende einiger Kapitel (“dass alles anders kommen würde” oder “dass er diese Entscheidung in den nächsten Tagen bereuen solle”).
Die Chemie des Todes macht dennoch Lust auf mehr und Beckett Fans können im zweiten Hunter-Thriller Kalte Asche weiter auf Spurensuche mit Dr. Hunter gehen.
